Most, if not all, tourists who come to Iceland will travel by foot in one way or another. Some shuffle off to the pool, others stroll down the Laugavegur shopping street, while others actually trek the Laugavegur hiking trail. In this article we will deal with the last group, the people who hike in the lowlands or in the highlands, enjoying the beauty of Icelandic nature, which can also be quite treacherous.
In each year of the last decade quite a few serious accidents have occurred involving hikers. The unpredictable Icelandic weather often comes as a surprise, but frequently it is a hiker’s overestimation of his or her abilities or, conversely, an underestimation of the conditions that causes trouble.
